Barbados is proud of its many parks and greenspaces. It seems as though everywhere you turn on the island the lush tropical plants and trees have been lovingly arranged into attractive natural paths leading from one comfortable shady bench to another.

Frequently parks are to be found on the grounds of the Great Houses of Barbados which once overlooked the island's vast plantations. Parks on these premises are graced with fantastic views of the coast. Some of the houses have fallen into ruin, throwing into relief the carefully nurtured grounds. 

Codrington College is one of those ruined great houses. The building housed the oldest seminary in the Western Hemisphere and is still a popular historical and educational site. The gardens and paths of the College are truly ethereal. Be sure to look for the ancient lines of poetry inscribed near the swimming pool.

The Palmers Plantation and great house is open for lunch and drinks, and the grounds are very romantic. Not surprisingly, the owner hosts wedding receptions and christenings in the chapel. The gardens are lush, filled with mahogany trees and set off by spectacular ocean views.  

Venture into the parish of St. Philip for a visit to the Castle of the infamous Sam Lord. Island legend claims that Sam was a plunderer, and hung lanterns in the trees of his property to lure unwary ships onto the rocks below. The massive house is surrounded by English gardens and beautiful lawns. It is now a luxurious hotel and open for public inspection.
