Horseracing
Since the colonial days of 1845, the fabled Garrison Savannah has been the home to the sport of kings in Barbados. Here, the Barbados Turf Club–which regulates and promotes the sport–annually organises three seasons of racing which run January to April, May to August and October to December.
For the serious punter, the Garrison offers several options for watching the races: from the Grandstand, Field Stand, Sir John Chandler Stand or, with a little luck and a proper invitation, from one of the luxurious Corporate Boxes overlooking the famous paddock bend.
Garrison Savannah can also be intrinsic to a fun day of family entertainment, where an informal picnic can be shared beneath the tall trees that surround the track.
life lessons: the barbados gold cup
The most prestigious horse race in the Caribbean, the Barbados Gold Cup first ran at the Garrison Savannah in 1982. Every March since, some of the best horses from the Caribbean, United States and Canada have come to stake their claim of the cup on the historic 6 furlongs track in St. Michael Parish.
