But their work had only just begun. After Bourne realised that the island's food supply was swamped with the same fertilizers and other harmful substances that he overcame, he decided to offer those same wholesome foods that helped him recover to the wider public to promote social changeā€¦. And so, from this, the Peg Farm & Nature Reserve was born.

The 108-acre plantation was formerly home to fields of tall, waving sugarcanes and has now been transformed into a destination for nutritious and delicious locally-grown produce and livestock, raised with the best holistic farming and lifestyle practices, ranging from biodynamics to free-range animal husbandry and broadacre permaculture.

Today, the reserve has developed several sustainable features including fresh fruit orchards, kitchen gardens and evergreen forest. It is also home to a breathtaking view of the east from the famous Hackleton's Cliff. Those that get to view it will be in awe of the stretch of lush vegetation that rolls off the 1000-foot-tall cliffs and extends down into the azure waters of the Atlantic sea. As an additional treat, at sunrise, visitors can bask in the rejuvenating warmth of the sun as it peeks out from under the horizon.

The Reserve also hosts several tours of its grounds three times daily - at 6 am, 9 am and 3 pm. Interested persons can do everything from interacting with the grazing animals to learning about plant life and their healing properties, to tasting the delightful flavours of their farm-to-table produce at the cafe (created by Head Chef Rebecca Waldron). Tours start from $130 Bds for adults and $100 Bds for children, however, children under 3 years old are free. Day passes can also be obtained at $15 for adults and $7 for children.

For those who wish to adventure even longer, take your chance to camp out overnight as the reserve is stocked with all you'll need to be at one with nature, including campfire pits, cooking supplies, forest showers and picnic tables.

The experience doesn't stop there. Peg Farm also offers several workshops in rotational grazing, medicinal plant experiences and basket weaving, so you and your family can use your newfound knowledge at home.

Peg Farm is the perfect place to enjoy a visit with your family and friends. Don't forget to explore more of St. Joseph or other places of interest, including Andromeda Botanical Gardens, for a tour of the wonderful flora on the island.
