Art in Barbados has evolved tremendously over the past decade and Caribbean art on the whole is receiving unprecedented international attention. This is particularly evident from the number of art galleries that have sprung up across the island in recent years.
There is a wide variety of beautiful local craftwork, much of it created out of the island’s most readily available natural resources such as clay, wood, palm leaves, bamboo, shells and leather. Pottery, batik, basket making, jewelry and woodcarving are among the prominent local skills.
The island’s “gentler side” offers a cultural haven among its action-packed activities, so steal away for a day and explore our outstanding galleries and crafts centers. Or hopefully your trip will fall during a festival that hosts an island craft fair, offering a colorful showcase of local talent. Four key events are: The Holetown Festival Street Market in February; the Oistins Fish Festival Street Market at Easter; the Crop Over Festival’s Bridgetown Market in August; and the Barbados Museum Annual Craft Fair in December.
