The dazzling waters of the Caribbean Sea, along with the gentle southeasterly trade winds, have been beckoning would-be sailors for centuries. With over 70 miles of pollution-free coastline and warm, crystal-clear, turquoise waters, Barbados offers excellent conditions for sailing and a huge fleet of pleasure craft from which to choose a cruise that is best suited to your individual taste.
Boats are all well maintained with fully-trained, friendly crews and plenty of recreational gear on board. The variety of cruises is wide and most set sail from Bridgetown and head north along the west coast of the island; this is the Caribbean side, where the sea is generally very calm and perfect for dropping anchor, taking a dip and snorkeling. For many visitors, the highlight of any cruise is swimming with the gentle turtles that glide gracefully around you as members of the crew swim up and hand-feed them.
To celebrate any special occasion, a private cruise with a few close friends and family gives you the freedom of choosing the setting and menu; you have the entire boat to yourselves, and the crew takes care of the rest.
So whether you are an avid sailor or a devout landlubber, you will truly relish a day spent sailing—the wind in your hair and the sparkling blue waters of the warm Caribbean Sea lapping beneath you.
The Mount Gay Rum/Boatyard Regatta
One of the best sailing festivals of the busy Caribbean calendar for 18 years, the Mount Gay Rum/Boatyard Regatta of early June is a Bajan boating classic. The sailing festival is a popular event and attracts sailors from all over the Caribbean, as well as many from a good deal farther away. Promoted as the fun event of the sailing season, this Bajan festival promises good competition and hard partying. The action begins on Thursday with registration, briefing and a rowdy barbeque at the Yacht Club and the racing begins on Friday morning. At the end of every day is an awards presentation, with the biggest affair landing on Sunday evening with a carnival atmosphere and festivities filled with much reverie and rum punch.
