The name Oistins is thought to have originated from an old landowner “Austin” who happened to be a known character around the island in his time.

Some of the most important events in the history of Barbados occurred in Oistins. In 1652 the Treaty of Oistins, also known as the Charter of Barbados, was signed in Oistins, at The Mermaid Tavern following a fierce battle. This document saw an end to the fighting between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists with Barbados recognising the authority of the English parliament. And this treaty lasted until 1966 when the island gained its independence.

As a point of historic note, it is also important to state that The Parliament of Barbados was also originally established in Oistins in 1639.

Oistins is a bustling village by day, home to traditional amenities as well as an open-air fresh fish market, shopping plazas,  fast food restaurants, a bus depot and access to beautiful beaches. This fish market is located next to Bay Gardens where the food vendors operate.  As such, the fish caught by local fishermen by day (utilising traditions passed down through their families for generations) is prepared and sold -  to be used as the main course for the dining Oistins experience at night.

As you may have already heard, Oistins is active on any given night, with many of the food vendors beginning around 6 pm and closing just before midnight. But Fridays in Oistins are extra special. Locals and tourists gather in their numbers to mingle, dance, sing karaoke, eat and drink. The crowds are usually quite large and therefore there may be an extended wait for food at the fish fry but the wait is well worth it.

Oistins is also widely popular as a result of the Oistins Fish Festival. An annual, week-long held in April each year, dedicated to celebrating the culture of the fishing village, the talents of the fisherfolk and their impact on Barbadian culture. This festival is a great opportunity to partake in some of the island's best Bajan cuisine as well as support the local vendors, farmers and artisans.

There are many vendors to choose from and vendors offer a variety of fish steaks of many kinds, ( mahi-mahi, tuna, snapper, barracuda, and sometimes lobster), along with complimentary sides and salads.

Oistins is perfect for the entire family or groups of friends! Head out to have an affordable, delicious meal while enjoying the local ambience of the market. Conversely, if you prefer a more quiet experience, visit Bay Gardens on weekdays when there is less foot traffic. In Oistins, there’s something for everyone.
