As you plan your 2016 Winter getaway think: “Run Barbados Marathon Weekend”. Runcation paradise! Forget the crowds of mega-marathons and prepare for small island charm, warm camaraderie and a run into the sea when you cross the finish. Look out for the "snow-cone vendors" and "tuk bands", run to the sounds of "steel pan" music and enjoy the local brews and festive atmosphere "apres run"! When the running is over lose yourself in this awesome destination (recently voted top Caribbean destination for 2016 by Expedia).

The 34th edition of AIMS-IAAF certified Run Barbados series is scheduled for Dec 2-4, 2016 and will feature a Marathon Relay in addition to the usual scheduled races.  The Signia Fun Mile and Pasta Party kick off the series followed by the Cave Shepherd 5K, Colombian Emeralds International 10K, Ganzee 5K Walk for Charity, Fortress Half-Marathon, Cave Shepherd Marathon and the Marathon Relay.  A wonderful mix of elite and recreational runners from across the globe and avid runners from the local running community are already signing up.

2016 will be a special year at Run Barbados as the event forms part of the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of Independence of Barbados.  Following a successful 2015 event one of the island’s most recognizable brands, the 110-year old Cave Shepherd & Co group of companies has joined forces with Run Barbados as the main sponsor of the event.

The start and finish of the “out and back” mostly flat routes are at the picturesque Bay Street Esplanade on the south coast of the island, overlooking the magnificent Carlisle Bay.  The courses wind their way along the streets of the capital city of Bridgetown, a historic seaport with the distinctive honour of being part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The 5K and 10K running tours of the City showcase historic landmarks such as the statue of Admiral Lord Nelson (c.1813), the Chamberlain Bridge (c.1865) and the Parliament Buildings (c. 1873).  From Bridgetown the Half-Marathon and Marathon routes continue north along the West Coast of the island to the turn around point near the world-famous Sandy Lane Hotel and then return to Bay Street for the finish.

We love this quote: Canadian marathoner Dylan Wykes, racing in Barbados in December 2008, noted:” You have to ask yourself: Where else in the world would you rather be at this time of year?”

This is your year! Run with us in 2016 and create yourself an unforgettable memory!
