For nearly 400 years travelers to the shores of Barbados have shared their stories of home and abroad, of adventure and hardship. In sum these tales reflect the history of Barbados and our increasingly interconnected world.
The Barbados Film Festival welcomes submissions from those who share our passion and belief in the power of storytelling to its inaugural festival January 11-15, 2017. The Festival is committed to exhibiting independent films – long, short, fiction or documentary – from around the world that use smart storytelling to express fresh ideas that will enlighten, inspire and entertain audiences.
The Festival seeks to provide a platform for feature-length, narrative films celebrating the power of resilience and humanity’s ability to overcome adversity.
Additionally, the Festival will screen and award prizes for documentaries and short films (running time 5 to 20 minutes) in the following thematic categories:
o Our World is Our Garden
o Shorts on the Beach – Short films focusing on oceans, marine life and their ecosystems
Visiting filmmakers enjoy complimentary accommodations and access to the Festival’s gala and special events. Curated, filmmaker excursions will also showcase the island’s extraordinary history, beauty and lively culture.
The festival will launch its first edition in the newly constructed theatre situated in the Walled Garden of what is at present the Barbados National Museum & Historical Society. Formerly a British military prison, the Museum, the adjoining Garrison and Bridgetown are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Part of the Barbados Film Festival Trust’s mission is to conserve these historical sites and invigorate them through the arts.
Please join us in making our inaugural festival an exhilarating week for filmmakers and audiences alike in a setting sure to capture the imagination and inspire creative and important outcomes in the future.
