Attractions Water Activities Surfing

Favored with some of the best waves on earth, Barbados has become a haven for professional surfers from around the Caribbean and the world. To help promote the sport on island, the Barbados Surfing Association hosts a Surfer of the Year series, which incorporates a number of competitions throughout the season. Each contest is divided among both men and women in the Junior, Open and Senior categories. Additionally, Open Long Board, Open Body Board, Masters and Grand Master divisions are included in each competition.

Several other high-profile competitions are held each year including the School Championships in April, Nationals in May and the Reef Bowl Surfing Classic, Pro Surfing Championship in November.

A treasured playground for surfers worldwide, the Soup Bowl on the eastern shore near Bathsheba in St. Joseph is the home of the best and most challenging surfing venue in the Caribbean. It is here in November, when the rollers are raging, that the Barbados Independence Surf Festival takes place, bringing top surfers from around the globe to the island to claim one of the crown jewels of international surfing.
